To begin with, the original Venetian lighthouse was built the late 16th century with the aim of protecting the harbor of the town. The Venetians, under the threat of the Turks started fortifying all towns throughout Crete. During this period, the Turks made interventions at the port of Chania. So, they built the bastion of Saint Nicolas as well as the fortress of Firkas. A chain would connect the fortress of Firkas with the lighthouse in order to close the harbor. As a result, the Cretans could protect the harbor entrance.
Chania Lighthouse – the most recognizable monument of the city.
However, during the Turkish occupation the lighthouse fell into disrepair. It was eventually reconstructed by the Egyptians during the period 1830-40, when the British Empire had assigned Crete to the regent of Egypt, Mehmet Ali. Moreover, it had a form as a minaret. Thus, it took the designation as an “Egyptian” lighthouse. Crete was occupied by Egyptian troops who were supporting the Ottoman Empire against the rebellious Cretans. At the end of the Ottoman era, the lighthouse was completed with the addition of the ladder on its east side. Another addition was the pipis through which the sea water was passing under the surface of its base.
The Egyptian lighthouse was leaning badly due to bombings during the World War II and the strong earthquakes. Eventually, it was extensively renovated in 2005 and nowadays it keeps the elegance and the history of the Cretans’ struggles. The base is still the original Venetian base, however, the Lion of Saint Marc wa long gone. Chania lighthouse measures 21 meters in height from the sea, surfaces 26 m2 and its headlight reaches a distance of 7 nautical miles. Its base is octagonal while the top part is circular.
