The Minoan Knossos Palace is a place of rich history and many legends. It is considered as Crete’s most significant archaeological site and as Europe’s oldest city.
The legendary palace is located 5 km south of Heraklion and dates back to 2000 BC. It was inhabited for several thousand years, but was abandoned after its destruction in 1375 BC. The latter event also marked the end of the Minoan civilization.
The Knossos Place gives a vivid picture of the sophisticated and prosperous capital of Minoan civilization. According to mythology, the palace is believed to be the mythical labyrinth in which Theseus slew the Minotaur.
